The giant 70ft figures that dominated the Tropical department at the north end of Crystal Palace depicted Rameses II were copied from those carved in the rock at the entrance to his temple at Abu Simbel discovered by Egyptologists in 1813. Note the Indian court behind. The figures were destroyed by fire on 31st December 1866.
