R&J. Hill cigarette cards - 1937 (varnished set) |
The firm of R&J Hill cigarettes was established on Shoreditch High Street, Hackney, London in 1785. They issued many sets of cards in the twentieth century including two versions of this Crystal Palace set. The cards were issued with their product, Sunripe & Spinet Oval Cigarettes.
The varnished front version was issued in 1937. The pictures and the text on the reverse are the same. The card size of both sets is 66 x 37mm.
The cards are black and white and feature interesting events, entertainments, foreign visitors, and many other scenes in the buildings long history at Hyde Park and Sydenham. Each card has much information on the back making these a worthy souvenir.
This is a rare and complete set of the 40 varnished front 1937 version of the cards.
